Legislative Decree 469/97 gives to italian Regions and Local Authorities the functions related to employment and active labor market policies, as part of the State's general role of guidance, promotion and coordination.

The Job centres operate at the provincial level according to the region's guidelines  with the aim of improving the access of the unemployed to the labor market. They also assist companies to promote the intersection between job supply and demand to prevent long-term unemployment. Each italian province identifies the types and forms of service and aid they consider most appropriate to the needs of its territory.
